A power outage can occur at any time without notice. With the sudden loss of electricity, your devices and appliances at home are likely to have shut down improperly. To prevent damage, the key is to turn them back on correctly.

How to Reset the Thermostat Air Conditioner After a Power Outage

In this article, HVAC maintenance and duct cleaning expert Stone Heating and Air shares some tips on resetting your thermostat and AC after a power outage.

Thermostat

If the power outage occurred during the warmer months, you can simply turn your thermostat to "Cool" and "On" once the power returns. You can also adjust it to a lower temperature to jumpstart your air conditioning.

In the winter months, however, you'll need to switch on "Emergency Heat" if your thermostat has been out for more than three hours. Maintain this setting for 24 hours, as it will quickly bring your home back to its normal temperature. Once the 24-hour period has passed, you can turn your thermostat to the "On" position.

Air Conditioner

For air conditioners, HVAC maintenance companies typically instruct homeowners to turn the air conditioner off at the thermostat. Then, it must also be turned off at the circuit breaker.

After switching the air conditioner off at the circuit breaker, you can turn it back on. Simply flip the switch back to the "On" position. Be sure to wait for 30 minutes, as your air conditioning system will need some time to reset before you can turn it back on completely.

Once the 30-minute mark has passed, you can go to your thermostat and turn your air conditioner back on from there. You'll know nothing has been damaged if you're able to turn the system back on without a hitch.
