The Different Types of HVAC Air Filters

There are several different types of filters designed for HVAC applications. They come in various sizes, types and efficiency ratings. Stone Heating and Air, your trusted HVAC repair company, explains the different options available and the things you need to consider when upgrading to a more efficient filter.

The Different Types of HVAC Air Filters

Flat-Paneled Fiberglass

These disposable filters contain layered fiberglass, and are on the low end of MERV ratings. A metal reinforcing grate that prevents collapsing has a surrounding cardboard frame. These filters protect HVAC components, but don’t do much when it comes to air purification.

Pleated Media

Pleated disposable filters carry a MERV rating of 5-13, with a high-efficiency rating between 14 and 16. The pleats increase the surface area of the filter, which raises its efficiency. A pleated filter falls short in air filtration efficiency when compared to HEPA filters, but they do provide less airflow resistance and suppress fan noise at a lower price. Check with your HVAC replacement company, Stone Heating and Air, about these ratings.

HEPA

HEPA filters provide the highest level of protection against airborne particles, according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency. They can trap particles as small as 0.3 microns or larger and catch 99.97 percent of airborne particles. They carry a MERV rating between 17 and 20. Most residential systems cannot support them due to their size and airflow restrictions, so they would first need some modifications done by an HVAC contractor to be used in a residential setting.

Reusable

Washable or reusable air filters is another HVAC option. While they’re more expensive than disposable ones, a simple cleaning allows you to reuse them. They do have a low MERV rating of between 1 and 4, however. Installing a still-damp filter can also cause mold and mildew growth, so it’s essential to make sure they’re completely dry first. Make sure to consult your air conditioning repair specialist about the maintenance of reusable filters.
