The Pros and Cons of a Zoned HVAC System

Centralized air conditioning systems maintain a consistent temperature throughout a building, but nowadays this can be more of a disadvantage. For one thing, there’s no consistent benchmark for a comfortable temperature level, because everybody has their own individual preferences.

The Pros and Cons of a Zoned HVAC System

Businesses, especially those working in the food and events industry, find a centralized air conditioning system to be quite disadvantageous. Take, for example, the case of a caterer: a catering company would have to prepare and plate perishable dishes in areas with lower temperatures, yet at the same time they’d need to keep the guest venue at room temperature.

With a zoned HVAC system, however, home and business owners alike can set different parts of their building at varying temperatures. But is it worth installing such a system? Stone Heating and Air, one of the top HVAC maintenance companies in the state, elaborates on how a zoned HVAC system differs from a centralized HVAC system and lists its pros and cons below.

Zoned HVAC Systems vs Centralized HVAC Systems

Unlike centralized HVAC systems, zoned HVAC systems feature motorized dampers in the ductwork, which separate the building into multiple zones. However, you can still set the temperature for individual rooms from the master panel.

Lower Energy Costs

The ability to set different rooms at different temperatures can help you reduce unnecessary power consumption and cut your energy bill. For example, on family night where everybody is gathered in the living room, you can raise or lower temperatures in the rooms that aren’t being used.

Fewer Repair Costs

Since a zoned HVAC system doesn’t have to work as hard to keep the entire building at a consistent temperature, breakdowns are generally fewer and home heating repair costs are reduced.

More Specialized Maintenance

However, since zoned HVAC systems are more complex than their centralized counterparts, they will need more specialized maintenance. As a consequence, the time it will take to repair an unexpected breakdown might be a bit longer as well. To prevent such breakdowns, have a reputable contractor routinely inspect and maintain your HVAC system.
