Fall-Friendly Tips: How to Save Money & Energy This Season

As you transition your closet from your summer favorites to much warmer fall and winter layers, it’s important to prepare your home to save energy and money, as well. Start with these top four fall-friendly, energy-conserving, money-saving tips from one of the most trusted home heating companies around, Stone Heating and Air:

Fall-Friendly Tips

1. Maintain your heating system. The first defense against high winter energy bills is annual preventive maintenance of your heating system. A qualified technician from reputable HVAC companies will perform tasks that improve energy efficiency, as well as help prevent common problems that reduce comfort and compromise efficiency.

2. Lower the thermostat. You can save a lot of money over the course of the winter by keeping your thermostat set at 68 degrees or lower. Turn the thermostat back 10 to 15 degrees while you sleep at night and stay warm with extra blankets or an electric blanket.

You may also keep window shades open during the day to take advantage of the warmth from the sun. Close them at night to keep the heat inside.

3. Use less water and water heating. Heating water for the home accounts for about 20% of your annual utility costs, according to air conditioning companies. Save money on your water and heating bills by lowering the water heater thermostat to 120 degrees and insulating the tank and exposed cold and hot water pipes to save up to nine percent on water heating.

Moreover, you can also install low-flow fixtures in the bathroom and kitchen and run the clothes washer on the shortest cycle using cold water to save money and preserve fabrics.

4. Don’t forget lighting. You can replace incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), which last about six times longer and use 75% less electricity. Also, put outdoor lights on a timer to ensure they’re only on when it’s dark.
