The cool, crisp weather of fall offers a welcome respite for homeowners after months of blistering summer heat. As the weather gets milder with the approach of fall and winter, do you still need to keep the AC running, or would it be more practical to simply crack open the windows?

Leaving the Windows Open While You Sleep 

According to sleep experts, the ideal temperature for sleeping is somewhere between 60°  and 67°F. Lowering the thermostat to these temperature levels can help you get a good night’s sleep. If, however, you want to lower your household’s heating and cooling costs, you can crack open a few windows to let the cool night breeze in.

Keep in mind that opening just one or two windows won’t be enough. To allow a pleasant breeze to flow through your home, you’ll need to open windows across the room from each other.

Why It’s Best to Continue Running Your HVAC System as the Weather Gets Colder

Leaving your windows open shouldn’t cause too many problems in late summer. However, when rains become more frequent as fall and winter approach, you should keep your windows shut and turn on your air conditioning unit or HVAC system to maintain good indoor air quality. This is because leaving your windows open enables moisture to infiltrate your interior.

Trapped moisture can create damp conditions that are ideal for the propagation of mold and mildew. Not to mention, open windows can allow dust, dirt and other allergens into your home, lowering indoor air quality. In addition to controlling indoor temperatures, air conditioners and HVAC systems also regulate humidity levels, helping maintain indoor comfort.

Don’t forget that your AC unit or HVAC system should be inspected at least twice a year. Routine AC or HVAC inspections and duct cleaning help prevent HVAC breakdowns, which are the last thing anyone wants in late fall.

We had our AC go out on one of the hottest days of the year. We called as soon as they opened and they came out so quickly and offered us some loaner units to keep our babies and animals cool in the meantime. Matt was so helpful and fixed the problem quickly.
